Alaska Humane Society

Who we are...

The Alaska Humane Society was founded in 1979 and established its first shelter in 1988. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates a no-kill shelter and sanctuary for "orphan" cats. We accept cats on the basis of need, not adoptability.

The Shelter...

The Adopt-a-Cat shelter currently houses about 150 cats. Our cats are all spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia, and micro-chipped. They roam freely through the shelter, enjoying the space and the ramps that allow them to travel upstairs and downstairs. Some of them form lasting friendships with other cats, and over the years, there have been a number of hot romances seen in the shelter.

Shelter hours are:

Monday - Friday, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm

Saturday and Sunday, 3:00 pm-6:00 pm.

Clear Creek Cat Rescue

Who Are We?

Clear Creek Cat Rescue is a group of individuals in Southcentral Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula dedicated to rescuing cats in need, giving them care, rehabilitation if needed, and finding happy homes for them.  We each give what we can to help these cats get through this most unfortunate time in their lives when they have been taken to the pound or are otherwise lost and homeless. Some of us share our homes with these cats while they are waiting for their forever family, some transport them from place to place, some host adoption fairs,  take pictures, post ads. Some offer financial help. We each do what we can to help. And through this dedicated group of people, about three thousand cats have been saved and found loving homes.

 What Do We Do?

Clear Creek Cat Rescue was originally founded to help find homes for the Mat-Su Animal Shelter’s cat population. Gradually we have expanded to cover a broader portion of the state and to take in cats that are strays or otherwise homeless.  We rescue cats from the Mat-Su, Houston, Kenai, Soldotna, and Homer shelters as well as homeless cats from southcentral and Kenai, Dutch Harbor, Bethel and other areas of the state. CCCR also takes in homeless cats of all kinds, including ferals; we also sometimes accepts cats from private individuals and other rescues when there is a need.

Through our Barn Cat Project, we trap, spay/neuter and vaccinate feral and colony cats, and rehome them to welcoming barn homes.

Cats - talent

Due to cats being shy than dogs in general, we do not require your cat to perform his/her talent on-stage during the event. You can record a good quality video (no longer than 2 minutes) to show during the pageant.  (Note that your cat does need to be present during the pageant, however.)

Do they need to dress up?

No - we do not require that you dress your cat/dog up for the pageant.

We encourage some flair, but just for the cuteness factor

(it will not be scored).

Safety

Safety is our #1 priority during the pageant.

All dogs will be required to be on a leash at all times, and with a handler. (We do not want any dogs/cats/humans to be hurt - dogs and cats can easily be scared and might act aggressively to defend themselves).

Cats will need both a leash and a kennel.

Stages of Competition

There will be 5 stages of competition:

Interview

(done at the time of the headshot session).

Introduction

(speak a little bit about your pet, and time to brag about him/her)

Talent

(anything that your cat/dog does that makes people

smile/laugh/go "aww" or "wow")

Cat / Dog walk

& On-stage questions

(Dog walk will be a small test of basic sit & lay skills.

Cats can either walk on-stage or be carried by their handler.

The on-stage question will be 2 questions for the handler: 1st is about the cat/dog, and the 2nd is about the shelter community. We will provide a general outline of what the latter question might be about so you can study/prepare.)
